A new leader for the insurgent group Boko Haram has been announced by the Islamic State.
The Islamic State better known as ISIS which was originally based in Syria and Iraq but now has several offshoots in many countries including Nigeria.
The release mentioned Abu Musab al-Barnawi, a former spokesman for Boko Haram under Abubakar Shekau’s leadership  as the new leader on the latest issue of an ISIS magazine as reported by the BBC .
The former leader Abubakar Shekau was not mentioned in the release. He was last seen in a Boko Haram propaganda video in March 2015, Shekau pledged allegiance to ISIS in one of  the many footages released in his years of leading a brutal campaign against the Nigerian state.

Boko Haram became more deadly and radicalized under Shekau’s leadership after he took over from the group’s founder, Muhammad Yusuf who died in police custody in July 2009.
