African Union launches visa free passport in contrast to Brexit

The African Union announced a new single common electronic African passport to  be  unveiled this month during its next A.U. Summit in Kigali, Rwanda in  a step towards the  integration of the continent. The main objective of the passport is to  boost the continent’s socio-economic development and reduce trade barriers that hinder the free flow of goods and services thereby borrowing a key principle of the 28-country bloc European Union which was recently tested to the limit by the migrant crisis and the U.K's referendum vote on its future. This steps taken by Africa to establish the free movement not only of people but also ideas, goods, services and capital to flow more freely across the continent in similarity to what seen in the EU.

The 54 member body  plans to have visa-free travel for all Africans visiting African countries by 2020, and will enact a free-trade agreement by next year.its
Chairperson Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma   called the initiative symbolic and said it is a “steady step towards the objective of creating a strong, prosperous and integrated Africa, driven by its own citizens and capable of taking its rightful place on the world stage.”

By 2020 the  Union aims for a visa-free travel for all citizens within the African  continent but before then only heads of state, government ministers and representatives of African Union will receive the passport. However, the intention is that each member state is required  to implement the laws and procedures required for the visa-free travel program before the   issuance  of the passport take place.
