In recent times, football is unquestionably the most lucrative careers in the sporting world and footballers who ply their trade in the sport has been rewarded immensely by this beautiful game. So what is the story to all the millions being splashed on footballers and how did it all start.


The first player ever to be transferred for a fee of over £100 was Scottish striker Willie Groves from West Bromwich Albion to Aston Villa in 1893, and then eight years later Alf Common moved to Middlesbrough Sunderland for £1000 after the legalization of professionalism in the sport.

The first five-figure transfer took place in 1928 when David Jack was transferred for a world record fee of £10,890 to Arsenal from Bolton.
A six figure transfer was recorded between 1949 and 1961, when Luis Suárez Miramontes was sold by FC Barcelona to Inter Milan for £152k, becoming the first ever player sold for more than £100k.

The first million pound player was Giuseppe Savoldi who held the record in 1968 when he transferred from Bologna to Napoli.
Ronaldo leads the new generation record busters with his record-breaking move from PSV Eindhoven to Barcelona in 1996 for £13.2m.
